Good F'ing Riddance
The Rev. Jerry Falwell, the iconic evangelist who inspired millions of right-wing Christian conservatives to political action, died yesterday of apparent heart failure. He was 73.
The homespun TV preacher, who was found unconscious in his office, founded the Moral Majority in 1979 to spearhead campaigns against abortion and gay rights, and helped shape political debate for decades.
But Falwell also outraged many with claims that AIDS was divine punishment for gays and that Sept. 11 was God's way of getting back at America for losing its moral compass.
He even claimed the colorful characters of the children's show "Teletubbies" were part of a gay plot to brainwash kids, singling out the pudgy, purple Tinky Winky as a stooge of "homosexual activists."
