The federal government has agreed to pay $80,000 to a Texas couple arrested
in Charleston three years ago during an appearance by President Bush.
Nicole and Jeffery Rank of Corpus Christi, Texas, were removed from the July Fourth, 2004, rally at the state Capitol in handcuffs.
They had refused to cover up the homemade T-shirts they were wearing that featured anti-Bush slogans. The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit alleging the White House has a formal policy of trying to hide dissenters from the media and the president.
In today's settlement announcement, ACLU of West Virginia Executive Director Andrew Schneider said it's a real victory not only for the Ranks but also for the First Amendment. He says that from now on, public officials will think twice before ejecting peaceful protesters from public events.
