I'm So Vain, Only In Dreams and Other Thoughts

Went to the container store yesterday with "the" girl, we had this exchange while leaving the store:

Girl: You know the guy behind the counter was totally checking you out.
R : Really?
Girl: Yes
R : See, your boyfriend is so hot that even guys want him.
Girl: Nothing like a little modesty.
R: Yeah, I know.

Anyways, I had a crazy dream last night that the Knicks had gotten Lebron James, I was all happy and then I woke up. Oh well.

Its 59 degrees outside right now. This is great, this is exactly what winter should be like. Better enjoy it because there are still a couple of months left.

More Food For Thought

This was in today's NY Post, since you have to sign up to read the article I'm including the text in this post:

DIVERSE TO PERVERSE
By JOEL SHERMAN

PEOPLE are gathering in the dark this month to cheer the message of inclusion at the heart of the film "Glory Road," which celebrates the 40th anniversary of Texas Western becoming the first team to win an NCAA tournament with an all black starting five.

Yet in the light of day - four decades after this seminal event - the subject obsessing sports New York this week is whether Omar Minaya has oversaturated the Mets' roster with Latino players. And, if my e-mail is any window into the soul of Mets fans, I fear we have veered off the Glory Road toward a bigoted Gory Path.

Instead of responding individually to these fine folks, I will let this column stand for my collective response:

1. Were you as outraged about the composition of the 2005 NL champion Astros, whose clubhouse was more Caucasian than a Neil Diamond audience? Houston had no black players on its postseason roster, 19 whites and just one Latino (Willy Tavares), who played a seminal role on the team. This representing a city that, according to the last census, was 42.7 percent Hispanic.

2. Are you as outraged that in a league that is 69.2 percent black, according to the last survey taken by the University of Central Florida Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports, the NFL has seen seven first-time head coaches hired and all are white?

3. Are you as worried about what it means for the future of baseball that Cliff Floyd might be the only black on the Met roster this year?

4. Are you proud of where you are from? I'm from Brooklyn and wouldn't want anyone to say I am from Queens, even though both are part of New York City. Then why are so many willing to lump Venezuelans (Jorge Julio, Victor Zambrano), Puerto Ricans (Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Ramon Castro, Jose Valentin) and Dominicans (Pedro Martinez, Jose Reyes, Victor Diaz, Duaner Sanchez) into one category based on what their native language is? Would anyone lump the team-oriented Derek Jeter and self-involved Randy Johnson into the same category simply because they both speak English?

5. Are you aware there are 2,218,633 New Yorkers listed as Hispanic/Latino in the last census? The New York Times did a story in Thursday's edition about a Washington Heights restaurant that was teeming with passionate fans watching the Dominican World Series - in January. As Mets executive vice president/business operations Dave Howard said, "One-third of New York is Latino. It is a substantial part of our fan base. Ethnic diversity in New York City is good business."

6. Have you noticed that an allure of the World Baseball Classic is that it will not be a layup for the United States? Teams from the Dominican, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Mexico, in particular, will be strong. In other words, the Mets are not exactly making up about half their roster with players from Yemen. These are players from baseball hotbeds.

7. Did you know that 29 percent of MLB players last year were Latino and that 45.4 percent of minor leaguers were foreign-born (most from Latin countries)? So if you do not like the composition of your team now, just wait.

8. If you are a Yankee fan, did you care that the team's last World Series victory was closed out by Panamanian Mariano Rivera and the clinching hit was produced by Luis Sojo of Venezuela? For Met fans, when Jesse Orosco heaved his glove after striking out Marty Barrett to finish the 1986 World Series, did you care that he was a Californian of Mexican decent?

And if Martinez wins the decisive game in October this year after a go-ahead hit by Delgado that scores Beltran, will you go to a confetti-strewn Mets parade and feel anything but joy? Maybe on that day the Canyon of Heroes will be, of all things, Glory Road.

Food For Thought

There is a great story in today’s Daily News about the Mets talking about how some people feel that the Mets GM Omar Minaya is turning the team “Latino” I think its best to read the article:

Never mind that the Mets are looking more promising than they have in years, I guess the fact that a team made up of predominantly Hispanic players is too much for some people. I love hearing people complain about this because I know for a fact that if the team were all white with a white GM no one would say a word. I think of the A-Rod mess with the whole WBC thing, I hear all these people calling into the sports shows talking about how A-Rod should only consider playing for team USA while no one utters a peep about Mike Piazza playing for the Italian team. I wonder why?

Friday Thoughts

So A-Rod decided to play for team USA in the Classic, I don't think I have ever seen someone so consumed with self-image, everything about this guy just screams phony. I came across this on espn today:

Listening to A-Rod explain his choice of country. The Dominican Republic ... the
U.S. ... the Dominican ... the U.S. He's sort of the WBC's Anne Heche --
constantly switching teams. Here's the latest: He's considering the Netherlands
because he got talked into buying a time-share in Curacao last winter, but he's
withholding his final decision until seeing which country is giving out the
nicest goodie bags.

I would have had a lot more respect for A-Rod if he would have just said that he would have just said he was playing for the USA from the get go. Obviously I'm not a fan of A-Rod, I won't be wearing my #13 shirt anytime soon, it sucks that he plays for the Yankees.

On another note, the NBA suspended Knicks forward Antonio Davis for going into the stands because he saw someone messing with his family. I don't know who can fault him for doing that. I know that if it were me and I saw that my family might be in some sort of trouble I don't care what the rules are I would get involved.

Its finally Friday, I can't believe that its already the 20th. Time is flying by.

The Week In Pictures

Its Week 2 of The Week in Pictures. Going left to right: Sunday's lunch, Vegas Poster, Where I Grew Up, The L.C., #11, Buildings in the fog, Empire State Building in the fog.

The Captain

I was lucky enough to be at Madison Square Garden last Thursday night for Mark Messier's number retirement. It was a night I won't soon forget. Some pictures from that night. Pictures are the 1994 Stanley Cup Championship Team, The Stanley Cup and Banner, Empire State Building decked out in Ranger Red, White and Blue, Number 11 up in the rafters, Light show on the ice before the game.

Life Lesson

We're all expendable. Doesn't matter who we are or what the situation is, in the end we're all expendable. The problem is when we forget this little lesson.

Tonight and Other Thoughts

Tonight the Rangers retire Mark Messier's number 11 and I by some stroke of pure luck will be in attendance. I still can't believe that I'm going to be at the Garden tonight for this. People who know me know how much I love that 1994 team and to be there for the retiring of the Captain's jersey is a huge deal for me. Can't wait.

Went to see 'Hostel' last night. Ok movie, not terrible but not something I would say is a must see. Enjoyable but better suited as a rental or if you catch it on cable sometime.

I just read an article today about how all the cell phone companies want to get together and get cell phone service on the subway here in New York. I don't know how I feel about this, on the one hand it would be good to know that you have service underground but on the other hand the subway is the only place left where you don't hear people talking away on their phones. Plus, with cell phone service on the subway we can't use the "Oh I was on the train" excuse when you don't want to talk to someone.

Going Bowl-ing and Weekend Picks

The college bowl season is finally over. Some very good games over the last week. The Buckeye's came away with a very impressive win over notre dame on Monday. I see big things for the Buckeye's next year. I would love to see them back at the Fiesta Bowl next year, winning the National Championship. The other big game was USC-Texas, very good game unfortunately the Trojans came up short. Some very questionable coaching decisions in that game by Pete Carroll, I think cost USC the game. So it goes. All the talk now is of Texas QB Vince Young going to the NFL a year early and maybe being the top pick, which I think would be a mistake since Young doesn't seem capable of throwing the ball more than 20 yards at a time. Well, regardless it was a very exciting season and I'm looking forward to next season. My one complain is can anyone in college actually kick? I don't ever remember seeing so many missed extra points and field goals.

On to the pro's who start the playoffs this week. Saturday's games have Washington at Tampa Bay. Right now I would not want to face this Redskins team, they seem to be peaking at the right time. Take Washington and the 3 points in this one.
The 2nd game has Jacksonville at New England. All the talk is Colts this, Colts that. Don't sleep on the Pats. This team knows how to win the big games. Take the Pats (-7) in this game.
Sunday's games have the Panthers at Giants. Have to go with Big Blue playing in front of a raucous crowd at Giants Stadium.
The last game has the Steelers at Bengals. I like the Bengals but there defense reminds me of the USC defense. I'm taking the Steelers in this game.

We'll see how I do.

The Weekend and Other Thoughts

Been a great weekend thus far. I'm happy to say that dinner with "the" girl and her parents went very well which is a big relief. That whole thing was just very nerve-wracking and I'm glad that it went well.

On another note, I've borrowed an idea from this person www.anyoldsite.com
I'll be calling it the picture project which is basically me taking one picture every day for a year. I tried this a while back and wasn't able to do it but I'm hoping that this time will be different. The whole idea of having a year's worth of random pictures is intriguing to me. Let's see if I can pull it off. I'll be posting pictures on here, probably on a weekly basis.

Tomorrow is the Fiesta Bowl with The Ohio State Buckeyes and Notre Dame, I'll take the Buckeyes (-4 1/2) in this one. Wednesday night is the big one with USC and Texas, go with USC (-7 1/2) on that one. Speaking of USC, the Jets won today which means no Reggie Bush for Gang Green next year. I'm sure that they will get some good players in the draft but I was really hoping to watch Bush play every Sunday for the Jets. Guess it wasn't meant to be.

Go Buckeyes!!!

Must Have

If you're a Yankees fan this dvd set is a true must have. You can read all about it here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009PLM6M/qid=1136133971/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-0806080-5843814?s=dvd&v=glance&n=130

I'm watching the 1996 video which is great to finally have on DVD. So many great memories. Definetly worth it if you're a fan. Hopefully I can add another championship dvd this fall.
